arch- more or less a rounded structure coming to a technical strong point. I perceived it as a pinnacle or zenith, annus, derived from latin for year. so the highest point of the year, which id say the longest length of darkness, ergo, the shortest day of the year, less light more dark, more cold. winter.

that was a long description for one word ;)

oooh.. the word 'archana' is from sanskrit (an ancient language that developed in the indian subcontinent)and pertains to worship... :)
